This year's Scottish IRTE show provided much food for thought for Institute members and other operators North of the Border. Attendance was a bit sparse on the first day but there was plenty of good news around the stands. Caterpillar took this opportunity to launch its latest 12-litre C12 engine while Renault and Daf unveiled a co-operative deal on mid-range truck components. There was even better news from Albion Automotive, which was created in 1993 following the Leyland Daf collapse. The Glasgow-based truck components manufacturer has secured a five-year, £30m deal with a Turkish engineering partner to supply axle sets to an Iranian vehicle building group. The first year covers some 10,000 light truck axles and is worth £10m—and Albion's chief executive Jim Hastie says: "There is potential to double the size of the business over the full period." This is good news indeed for the 1,100 workers in Albion's Glasgow and Lancashire factories. The company had a £75m turnover in the year to March 1997.
