• When a shabby Ford Cargo drove through a vehicle check and refused to stop for police, two artic drivers came to the rescue.
South Yorkshire police could do nothing about the suspect vehicle as it sailed past the vehicle check they were manning as part of Operation Mermaid, an ongoing series of roadside checks on commercial vehicles. Even police motorcyclists failed to flag it down. But Iwo quick-thinking truckers saved the day by boxing in the fugitive, who turned out to be driving the van without the owner's permission.
Operation Mermaid has resulted in the recovery of a number of commercial vehicles.
