• Ferries between the Isle of Wight and the English mainland are speeding-up their vehicle unloading operations by using a wheeled variable geometry steel wedge.
The wedge was originally developed to prevent coaches from scraping their undersides, at the front and rear, when embarking and disembarking, but it also speeds unloading of lorries.
Red Funnel Ferries, which developed the wedge, says that disembarking now takes "a matter of minutes".
The company originally considered using a conventional linkspan to solve the problem, but there was insufficient space for it at East Cowes.
