FROZEN AND CHILLED meat supplier Tulip says plans to close part of its factory in Thetford, Norfolk, with the potential loss of 400 jobs, will not affect drivers at its distribution hub on the same site.
The firm's parent is Danish Crown, which owns the Danepak brand. A spokesman says that overcapacity in the market has resulted in the factory "losing money for a considerable period of time".
He reports: "It's a very old site, largely uneconomical to run in terms of energy usage." A final decision on the site's future has yet to be made and the spokesman says management is disappointed that the Transport & General Workers Union has focused on organising a protest rather than discussing alternative arrangements But he stresses that even if the factory does close following a 90-day consultation, driving jobs will not be affected: "It's a large production facility: we're not proposing to close the whole site.
-There is a warehouse and distribution hub there and volumes will still be going through."
