It was the Saturday night before Christmas and the streets in London's Eastern hemisphere had their usual complement of marketers and mud. .
When the bus had pulled up, the driver noticed a little girl who flitted, moth-like, round his headlamps. She vanished And he forgot her until the conductor gave his "right away" signal ; then her voice rose shrilly above the throb of the engine : "Ow 'Old on a minute, carn't yer, mister ? Yer ran over our Micky's mincepie, but 'e says if y'd loan 'im a knife 'e can git back the most of it on the wheel in 'ail a tick."
