of competition, not only from the U.S. and Germany but also from the Japanese" was expressed by Mr. Donald Stokes, managing director of the Leyland Motor Corporation, on Monday.
"These people", he said, "are forward-looking in design and development, and whilst we are not afraid of competition we have constantly got to remember that we can under no circumstances sit back complacently basking in past successes.
"We are determined, here, to keep ahead technically, and over the past few years we have spent over £15 m. on research and development."
Mr. Stokes was speaking at the apprentices' annual prize distribution.
