CURRENTLY under threat of closure — as part of rationalisation plans for lveco psv production — the Mainz plant of Magirus-Deutz has received an order for 100 city buses for Athens. Bus production in Mainz last year totalled only 600 units of which 348 were sold on the home market. The labour force at Mainz has already been reduced by about 20 per cent although the plant also builds military vehicles and carries out major mechanical overhauls of German and British (Rhine Army) defence equipment.
The order now received from the EAST City Bus Organisation in Athens calls for E 113-based vehicles similar to 200 units supplied in 1980. They have aircooled V-8 engines of 154kW and will be fitted with locallybuilt three-door bodywork by Deutz-Hellas in Piraeus. In the coach sector Magirus-Deutz buses have a 40 per cent share in Greece.
