IN PRESENT TRADING conditions it appears, at first sight, that company pay agreements rather than area agreements make sense. That would be so if the end product was an agreement which meant that each company paid what it could afford. However, that is not what appears to be emerging in South Wales. The claim is the same across the board. Each employer will be receiving the same claim irrespective of his financial position. The Transport & General Workers Union quite properly points out that the Road Haulage Association does not represent all the employers. It does not say what proportion of drivers the TGWU represents. Operators must be careful that they do not become fragmented in these "company negotiations". The union leaves itself open to the accusation that it is once again picking off the employers, company by company. Is it not part of the union philosophy that "unity is strength"? Why then should unity be the preserve of the employees in negotiations.
Let the TGWU negotiate separately with those employers who are not in membership of the RHA but the RHA members should hold together and reach a settlement which all can afford.
