We reap what we sow
As a transport manager for the past 10 years. I saw my last apprentice leave about two years ago. He had a four-year apprenticeship with my department under very watchful eyes, and he passed with credits.
Sadly, two weeks after finishing he handed in his notice. One of the problems companies and apprentices face when both sign the indentures is that a job cannot be guaranteed available when their time is up, so before their time finishes they are probably looking around to better themselves.
I would love to see the Government make a subsidy available to the apprentice and the company to provide a job for, say, at least two yews. Otherwise, in another 20 years' time there may be no young, skilled I IGV fitters at all. George Warren,
