truck fitted with a tracking system is calling on the device's manufacturer to change its design to prevent it happening again. Paul McCarthy of Barking-based PM Site Services is calling on Securicor to weld the TrakBak device to the vehicle rather than bolting it on, to provide a back up power supply and to make it tamper proof. This follows the loss of McCarthy's Volvo FL10 in December last year (CM 8-14 Dec 1994). All the thieves left was the actual device and the truck's windscreen after the system was disabled and ripped out. McCarthy has demanded the return of the £1,000 fitting cost from Securicor.
Securicor says it is still evaluating McCarthy's case but says all systems carry a back-up battery pack and the firm is looking at improving the product's design to combat any tampering.
• Owner-drivers and fleet operators who have fitted TrakBak can save 15% on insurance premiums as a result of an arrangement between Securicor and General Accident. Fleets of up to 25 vehicles can negotiate even lower rates.
