ALTHOUGH, judging by the list of those who gave evidence to the Committee on Administrative Tribunals and Inquiries, no representations were made by road transport operators, the committee (whose report was published last week) recommended that no change be made with regard to the traffic courts or Transport' Tribunal, as these. were functioning satisfactorily.
It was, however, suggested that in coach and bus cases, there should be a right of appeal from the Minister of Transport to the Courts on a point of law.
The committee did not think it necessary that the Transport Tribunal should have power to issue subpoenas or to take evidence on oath.
The committee recommended that a permanent standing council on tribunals should be established and should report to the Lord Chancellor. It would apply to all existing tribunals the principles of openness, fairness and impartiality, and would advise on the establishment of new tribunals.
