The Vehicle Inspectorate has opened a lagship testing station in Manchester— its first new site for 10 years—but has no )lans for further building projects.
At the opening of the Chadderton site, in chief executive Maurice Newey said: Some older stations are getting towards the end of their obvious lifespan," But he idded: "We are looking to see where there s a case for modernisation."
The £6.5m Chadderton site will handle 200,000 vehicle tests a year.
Meredydd Hughes, Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, says the new test station will help ensure there is no repeat of the infamous Sowerby Bridge disaster, in which an HMI with defective brakes ploughed into a chip shop. "I saw the impact that had on the local community at the time and the impact it has had ever since," he adds. They still have a very real fear of commercial vehicles in that area."
All vehicle tests will be completed indoors: North
West 1/1 regional manager Phil Lloyd says this will help eliminate any human errors in the test procedure.
