on the right'
• Driving on the right will be the law of the land if the EEC motor industry has its way.
In resolutions sent to the Community Institutions in Brussels last week, the Liaison Committee of the Automobile Engineering Industry has requested that Great Britain should be bound to adopt driving on the right before the end of the transition period in the event of membership of the Common Market. The reason for the request was that vehicle producers in the present Community are at a disadvantage on the British market because they have to manufacture special r-h-d vehicles.
On the other hand, says the Committee, British manufacturers would not be under a similar disadvantage in the Community because in any case they already produce large quantities of both leftand right-hand drive vehicles. The competitive advantage would be particularly obvious for British bus and commercial vehicle manufacturers, the Committee points out.
