for a 62-year-old driver who has only one eye? This driver has had 40 years' experience on heavy goods vehicles and held the old hgv driving licence before the war. Do you think he will be able to obtain a new hgv driving licence?
AIt is impossible to say for certain whether the person you mention would be able to obtain an hgv licence. Assuming
that he was driving heavy goods vehicles for at least six months in the 12 months from
February 2. 1969 to 'February 1, 1970 he would qualify automatically for a licence from the driving point of view; otherwise he would have to pass an hgv driving test. But in both cases he would also have to produce a medical certificate, which is part of the hgv. driving licence' application form, based on medical examination by any doctor of his choice.
Doctors who undertake this sort of medical examination are guided by a leaflet issued by the British Medical Association which recommends that an hgv driving licence applicant should not be passed as suitable if he lacks vision in one eye (and suffers any other disabilities which are listed). This medical opinion can only be a recommendation. The final decision to issue a licence rests with the Licensing Authority.
