Sites: Nine motorway service stations on the M8 at Harthill, Lanarkshire; M74 at Bothwell, Lanarkshire; M74 at Hamilton, Lanarkshire; M6 at Killington Lake, Cumbria; M6 at Sandbach, Cheshire; M4 at Pont Abraham, Dyfed; M5 at Sedgemoor, Somerset; M5 at Taunton Deane, Somerset and M27 Rownhams, Hampshire. Three sites offer overnight accommodation and a 10th is due to open by autumn 1993 on the M25 at Clacket Lane, near Westerham, Kent.
Opening hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. About 10% of Roadchef's business is from truck and coach drivers.
Parking: Space for 30-100 trucks. Costs £5 for overnight parking, including £1 restaurant voucher and free showers at Sandbach, Sedgemore, Hamilton, Harthill and Bothwell.
Accommodation: 36-39 rooms per site. Typical costs are: Taunton Deane, £29; Rownhams, £32; Hamilton, £36 for room with bath, shower, TV, tea/coffee making equipment and hair dryer, Room fees include £1 voucher towards cost of English breakfast.
Food: English breakfast costs £4.85, including tea and coffee. A "healthy eating section" features salads, including roast chicken, quiche, smoked trout for £4,99. Main course averages £4.35, pudding is £1.40. Roadchefs tea has won the "Best Cup of Tea Award" from the Tea Council three times — the Rownhams site earned the accolade last October. A pot of the prize-winning brew costs 80p.
Entertainment: TVs in some restaurants.
