A Tradesmen's Holiday Creates a Big Demand for Road Tours.
THE Blackpool motor-coaching season has now begun in real earnest. It started on May 18th with the local tradesmen's holiday, and coach owners, mindful of the fact that all those interested are anxious to matte the most of this holiday, arranged a particularly comprehensive programme of tours of from one to eight days' duration. For the long-distance tours saloon types of vehicle were mostly employed.
Three companies sent vehicles to the South Coast, Messrs. Empire Motors, W. Marshall and Sons and A. 'Whiteside, whilst Messrs. Armitage and Sons accepted bookings for tours to Scotland. For an eight-day tour to the South Coast, the charge, covering the cost of travelling, bed, breakfast and late dinner each day, was eight guineas, whilst for the four-day tour of the South Coast the charge was 14 10s.
It has been found from experience that for the tradesmen's holiday the main demand is not for tours which
occupy a week, but for runs of two, three and four days. Of these, the two-day tours were the most popular, the itineraries including trips to the Lake District, North Wales and Yorkshire. About eight owners concentrated on North Wales and a similar number on the Lake District. The cost of twoday tours, including hotel expenses and meals, was generally two guineas, but here and there some owners quoted £1 17s. 434., and even £1 12s. 6d., although, of course a lower mileage might, to some extent, account for fhese differences. The charge for a four-day tour was in the vicinity of £4 10s. In addition to the main tours of the week, there was an attractive programme of day trips to Liverpool, Morecambe, Southport, Chester and Yorkshire towns. The fares for these did not, in any case, exceed 10s. for the return journey. It seems that Blackpool motor coach owners have had the question of rates under consideration, for some of
those 'which have been quoted are a distinct improvement upon the charges which were made during recent years.
