III Volvo has produced an airbag system for truck cabs,
Lennart Svenson, safety engineer at the Umea cab plant says that Volvo's Accident Investigation Team has been analysing truck incidents throughout Europe for 20 years. It concluded that seatbelts would significantly reduce driver injuries in 60% of serious accidents, and would make things worse in only 5% of
cases. A steering-wheel-mounted airbag could reduce injuries in a further 20% of accidents, but only if used together with a seatbelt. Swedish rival Scania is also looking at airbags Volvo describes the airbag as a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). An FH cab installation has been demonstrated but a date has yet to be set for a launch. Side and foot airbags are also under consideration.
