• The Road Haulage Association is urging the Government to accelerate plans forcing motorway service areas to grant access to all recovery operators. Until the Government sells its freehold interest on MSAs—a process which starts this summer—MSA operators are empowered to decide which recovery firms they allow on-site. As a result hauliers are often forced to use MSAfranchised recovery firms which tend to be more expensive than their preferred operator. Chelmsford-based Steeles Transport was recently refused permission to call in its contracted supplier for a tyre change at a Roadchef MSA. It says it was forced to pay twice the market price For the tyre. The tyre supplier, ATS, says it invoiced For the tyre according to the National Tyre Distributors Association's rules.
