• The Australian Trade Practices Commission has instituted legal proceedings against three express freight conglomerates.
The three companies — TNT Australia, Ansett Transport Industries (Operations) and Mayne Nickless — are named in documents lodged in the Federal Court in Sydney. Nineteen senior executives of the three companies have also been named.
The commission alleges that for several years the three companies operated as a cartel in order to fix prices and regulated their market shares in the express freight industry in contravention of the Australian Trade Practices Act.
A directions hearing has been set for next February.
