• Members of the European Parliament have called for tougher legislation to limit diesel's sulphur content.
The European Commission wants to bring in limits on sulphur content by October 1994. And when oil companies have switched production to cleaner fuels further reductions will be introduced by October 1996, requiring diesel to be four times cleaner than at present. High levels of atmospheric sulphur dioxide from diesel exhausts are blamed for acid rain.
At a meeting in Strasbourg last week EC transport commissioner Karel van Miert pleaded for more time to allow truck manufacturers and oil refineries particularly in southern Europe to adjust to the use and provision of cleaner diesel.
