Operators are being fussy over truck specs, even though late-year, low-mileage vehicles are
thin on the ground. Steve Banner reports.
Despite the current climate, first-time owners are still more likely to sell their trucks fast if they have all the modcons.The shortage of late-year, low-mileage tractor units is not making customers any less picky when it comes to specification,says Phil Holmes, used sales man ager,eastern region. at Scania dealership Keltruck.
Yet although they might dig their heels in when it comes to cab size and trim, some buyers are proving willing to be flexible over horsepower. "I've got one customer who is prepared to accept anything between 420hp and 500hp," he observes. Flexibility over age and mileage is another matter, however, "Somebody who is set on a 2004-vintage vehicle may not be willing to take one that dates back to 2003 instead, and mileage remains a sensitive area," he says.
One problem for many buyersseven after all these years, seems to be confusion between miles and kilometres. "While customers may not be keen on something that has done 600,000 to 700,000km, that translates to 375.000 to 437,500 miles," Holmes points out. "When you look at it in those terms, you realise that it's not a lot for a modern truck." •
