• Mr Alan Law, Birmingham TGWU trade group secretary, on Monday called action by 40 striking BRS lorry drivers "totally unconstitutional" and refused to meet them.
The men, from the Erdington depot, were striking because they said that Mr. John Webb had done "blacklisted" work on two days last week. Mr. Webb, a relief driver, is one of the D. E. Hines (Transport) Ltd., Streetley, drivers who are still on strike although the firm closed down in August after a long union dispute.
According to Mr. Law, Mr. Webb had been sent to BRS as a holiday relief. It was fundamental, he said, that when jobs disappeared the displaced drivers would have the first opportunity of following their work. Any attempt by the strikers to challenge this would not have union support.
