• by Colin Barnett The Vehicle Inspectorate is about to incorporate checks on speed limiters into the annual test for 110 Vs and PSVs, From now until 13 February 2003 operators will simply be advised of any problems; after that date, any defects will incur a test failure.
The checks will be carried out in one of two ways. Normally, electronic test equipment will be connected to the tachograph. With the engine running it will simulate the speed signal to the limiter until the engine speed reacts.
If it is "either. technically or practically impossible' to use this method, the operator will have to produce five consecutive tachograph charts from the previous 28 days of service to verify correct operation. in the unlikely event of neither method being possible, the vehicle will still pass, but the VI's enforcement section will be advised so that appropriate action can be taken.
An explanatory leaflet on the new scheme is available from VI test stations and designated premises.
