haul you backwards needs a fair amount of co-ordination and precision. Let the pedal up too quickly and
it may stall; too slowly and the wear accelerates, the heat build-up is phenomenal and the clutch's early demise is a racing certainty. So if the original component is to last a reasonable length of time, a lot depends on the driver's training, experience and understanding of how the coupling operates. But when replacement clutches fail prematurely, the owner will want to know why.
Exactly why exchange items don't seem to last the life of the original has become an all-too-common question, according to Sachs-Boge UK.
Technical manager Matt Shakespeare believes that the operators concerned and their maintenance staff should first focus on the clutch's working environment, looking at any other component that might affect its correct operation.
For example, if the supporting areas on the release fork are worn Or too dry, or inner working parts have become contaminated with dirt or are incorrectly greased, then clutch engagement can be delayed and the slippage just cranks the temperature up.
If the hub splines are incorrectly lubricated—or simply not greased at all—or the pilot bearing becomes sluggish, gear changes will be affected and the driver soon starts to feel uncomfortable.
