• Vehicle recovery operators in Staffordshire are to appeal against a High Court ruling that they have no contract with their local police force.
Six operators took Staffordshire Police and its managing agent SF-IL to court, claiming there was no guarantee of payment for police work even
though they pay a £10 administration fee every time they are called out (CM12-18 Sept).
Mike Eagles, consultant to the Road Rescue Recovery Association, says lawyers acting for the operators have agreed to work on a "no win, no fee" basis. "To go ahead on that basis shows they are pretty confident," he says.
Unpaid debts to the operators are reported to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds since SHL took over the contract in 1999,
