A PARTICULARLY interesting, if tit somewhat futuristic, scheme for the disPosal of house refuse was put forward recently by Mr. Morris M. Cohn, editor of the American journal "Sewage Works Engineering," at a London meeting of the, Institute of Public Cleansing.
It comprises sub-surface collection by a20 '
special sewers, possibly kept under suction by pumps. The materials concerned would be automatically ground at each home and delivered to the sewage pipes, through the medium of air locks, being discharged into incinerators at the disposal point.
To pulverize hard materials would, involve noisy mechanical devises. Therefore, only the easily crushable or ground materials would pass into the pneumatic system; the disposal of other material would be by standard methods. He admits that his scheme may be somewhat visionary, but many others once considered to be virtually impossible have become current practice.
