ti been appointed to model a State transport system in Southern India. He is Mr. E. G. Salter, who, until recently, was an official of London Transport.
Travancore State is about to embark upon the complete reorganization of its road-transport system, and Mr. Salter has been appointed to put its new policy into effect. The Government has decided to take over the running of bus services from Trivandrum to Cape Comorin, as a preliminary to a more general scheme of Government-owned and managed transport.
This decision follows upon a successful experiment of a similar nature already carried out in Hyderabad. As traffic is greater in Travancore, even more encouraging results are expected.
*Sixty Commer N3 vehicles have been ordered, 50 of them being buses. All are to be equipped with Perkins Lynx oil engines, oil fuel costing only one third the price of petrol in Travancore. The vehicles are being exported in a knocked-down condition and will be assembled in India.
Mr. Salter, who will sail for Hnclia on the m.v. " Cheshire" on Saturday. September 4, was, from 1924-29, managing director of Ideal Motor Coaches, Ltd., •of Luton and Dunstable. After that he was, for a year, assistart superintendent at Luton to the Eastern National Omnibus Co.. Ltd., and then became district superintendent at Ware and Bishop's Stortford for the National Omnibus and Transport Co., Ltd.
Later, he transferred to the schedules office of London Transport, at :Reigate, finally becoming assistant to the operating superintendent of the Board's country buses. He has had a wide experience of co-ordinating country bus services, acquired from smaller operators. Already he has prepared a layout for a garage for 60 buses at Travancore.
