• The Government has turned down a £28.1m management/employee buyout at Strathclyde's Buses. The deal was negotiated over the past 20 months between staff and the regional council which owns the company.
Scottish Secretary of State Ian Lang told the council that he was "not convinced the price on offer is within the range of prices which might have been achieved had an open market sale been pursued".
But Strathclyde Regional Council disagrees — it had accepted the offer as "reasonable".
Councillor Malcolm Waugh, chair of the roads and transportation committee, wants "an urgent meeting at political level to discuss the terms of your (Lang's) decision".
The council's deputy chief executive John Anderson says that if the team was to put in a higher bid "something would have to give" at the firm, which has more than 2,600 staff and 800 vehicles at four depots.
