• In an effort to head off cuts in the Government's road building programme the Confederation of British industry has called for more spending on Britain's transport infrastructure.
Funding for maintaining or expanding road building, and investment in the rail network, should be guaranteed through containing increases in public sector pay, says CBI director Howard Davies in a letter to Michael Portilio, Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
The letter comes as Portal° presides over this year's negotiations for public spending, when the allocation for transport spending is expected to come under renewed pressure.
Davies says: "While the private sector may usefully fund some of this investment, the bulk will need to be financed out of public expenditure."
