• The first Iveco truck to run on natural gas has gone into service with Swedish National Rail. The 40-tonne GVW prototype 240.26 6x2 tractive unit is powered by an New 8469.41 six-cylinder four-stroke spark ignition CNG (compressed natural gas) engine based on the charge-cooled 8460.21 diesel engine. It has a closed-loop stoichionetric mixture control with three-way catalyst.
The head was modified for spark ignition and materials matched for valves and inserts. The piston ring pack was modified for low oil consumption; the wastegate turbocharger has a water-cooled bearing housing and the fuel system is managed electronically.
The 450-litre compressed gas pack of nine 50-litre steel cylinders gives the prototype a range of 400km.
While fuel consumption is slightly higher than with diesel fuel, it is said to be quieter and exhaust emissions are cleaner.
