• Leeds-based MacFarlane Transport has been fined £250 with .C65 costs by West Bromwich magistrates after admitting sending out a lorry without a functioning tachograph.
Karen Salisbury, prosecuting, said the offence came to light when one of the firm's articulated lorries was inspected at the Perry Barr site, off the M6 at Birmingham, on 21 March.
Gordon MacFarlane, the firm's managing director who attended the hearing, said a junior assistant responsible for the tachograph had since been sacked and replaced with a senior and experienced traffic manager.
"This is the first time in 20 years the firm has found itself in this situation but everything has now been put right," said McFarlane.
