DRIVERS' tax-free allowance on subsistence is to be raised from £3 to £4.50 per night spent away from home—but they will have to be certified as genuine to avoid false claims.
The new allowances were agreed by the Freight Transport Association and the Road Haulage Association in a meeting with the Inland Revenue which was held to discuss the whole question of drivers' allowances and income tax. (CM last week).
And to beat the drivers who put in false claims for the allowances a new certificate is to be devised by the RHA and the FTA that will be used with claims for the allowances and will almost certainly be presented to the Inland Revenue with a drivers' tax form.
CM was told this week that the Inland Revenue is taking the attitude that they will allow the higher allowance to take account of inflation, but that there must be a system to beat false claims—that is where the certificate comes in.
A spokesman for the RHA said that they were happy with the situation. "We will try an( get the whole thing sorted out now and then advise member: on what to do. We feel that the situation has been very much clarified," he said.
