HEAVY cut-backs in bus services, coupled with big fare rises, are now on the cards following the Government's public spending cuts.
Local authority bus and Underground subsidies, currently running at about £135m, are to be tapered off to £48,5m by 1978-79. This is the money which has been mainly used to keep bus fares down.
In the White Paper the Government also say that they intend to carry on the shift from holding down fares in the major conurbations towards maintaining ;the level of service in less densely populated areas.
And a consultation paper circulated to operators after the White Paper was published has suggested a £42m cash ceiling for bus grant payments in future years.
