r SHE latest form of Luton van body _L made by Spurling Motor Bodies, Ltd., Edgware Road, London, N.W.9, for the various Bedford chassis, makes considerable use of steel members.
The main cross-bearers, for example, are constructed of steel sheet pressed into box and channel sections, so as to form bridge-like members, and these replace the familiar heavy woo bolsters. The side pillars are of box section, whilst the hoopsticks are socketed for 3 ft. of their height in the pillars.
The skirt of the body is carried 6 ins. lower than in the older type, thus enhancing the appearance of the vehicle, and a further improvement in this respect is obtained by means of a domed front, which gives ample capacity for the load and a recinced wind resistance. Electric welding is used for the joints and, as a safety measure, the more vital joints are riveted.
The body fitted to the Bedford 30-cwt. or short 2-ton chassis has an inside length of 9 ft., being 7 ft. high, and the price is £60 with boarded top, or £52 with slatted top. On the Bedford long 2-ton chassis the inside length is 11 ft. 6 ins., the height being 7 ft. and the width 6 ft. 8 ins. ; the boarded-top body costs Elfl 30s., and the slatted-top body £67 10s.
