ahe recent theft of a Leyland Daf 1718 Freighter from a west London warehouse would probably not have made headlines but for the fact that the vehicle contained two pieces of modern art valued at £36,000.
One of these is a sculpture valued at £30,000 by the artists Gilbert and George called Gold Head World—it is made up of 225 postcards featuring Nick Kamen. star of a Levi jeans advertisement. The other piece, valued at 16,000, is a costermonger's barrow by Michael Landy.
The pieces were being stored by Maxtrams, which specialises in fine art storage and transport.
Managing director Qumar Islam doubts if the "average lorry thief would appreciate art—he's more likely to say 'the crate's worth something—what's this rubbish inside?'
