THE FIRST big UK reorganisation of parcels giant UPS since its acquisition of Lynx Express a year ago will result in a new hub at Tamworth.
Construction work has started at Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT) next to junction 10 of the M42; completion is due in October 2007.
The building will be UPS's largest in the UK and capable of handling 42,000 packages an hour.
"The company is undertaking analysis of the future functions of the existing UPS and Lynx sites in the area," says a company statement.
Mick Cash, senior assistant general secretary of the RMT union, believes the investment will lead to more jobs — although not necessarily full-time ones. "We're still trying to talk to UPS about what integration means for terms and conditions." He adds that the RMT represents more than 200 Lynx drivers in the area.
Cash predicts that the Lynx operations at Nuneaton and Birmingham, together with the UPS hub and depot in Nuneaton, will all be consolidated on the Tamworth site.
UPS bought Lynx for £55.5m (CM 28 July 2005).
