INNOVATE LOGISTICS has begun reshaping its newly acquired Grampian Country Transport (GCT) business by closing its main warehouse and relocating drivers.
OCT was bought from Grampian Country Food Group as part of a strategy to make Innovate the market leader in temperature-controlled transport (CM 9 March).
Managing director Pete Osborne says: "We've decided to relocate the Thorne [South Yorkshire] warehouse operation and 50% of the transport operation to Dther Innovate sites.
"The need for this arose from changes in market volume and customer requirements."
The Thorne depot employs nearly 100 drivers, but only a limited number are expected to take up the company's offer of relocation elsewhere in the business.
Dave Swan, regional officer for the United Road Transport Union, says the nearest Innovate depot is by junction 29 of the Ml. "For anybody who lives around Thorne it will be too far."
However, he praises the coin pany for beginning negotiations well ahead of the planned shakeup in October.
Drivers who decide to leave the company could find alternative jobs at one of the biggest warehouses in the country, which is due to be completed on the edge of Thorne in November. The 70,0(X)m2 building at Nimbus Park is expected to create hundreds of driving and warehouse jobs.
