IT MIGHT BE STATING the obvious, but the latest Department for Transport (DfT) statistics tell us that the harsh weather conditions at the beginning of the year resulted in 100 million fewer vehicle kilometres covered by HGVs.
As the country bakes in unseasonably high temperatures, it is worth noting that, during the first quarter of 2010, trucks accounted for 6.4 billion vehicle kilometres in Britain, down from 6.5 billion in 01 2009 — and during that period heavy snow hit the country as well.
Fewer HGVs used urban A-roads as a result of those artic conditions, as HGV traffic fell by 6% between January and March 2010 compared with the previous year, from 82.4 billion vehicle kilometres to 77.7 billion.
• And the DfT award for the slowest morning rush-hour goes to: Greater Manchester. Mancunians had the slowest journey time per mile during the morning peak during February, at 4.32 minutes. Believe it or not, Londoners cover a mile in 3.02 minutes...
