STOP/START engine technology is to be fitted as standard on both Mercedes-Benz Atego and Axor trucks up to 26 tonnes from January 2009.
Although the company won't be drawn on specific fuel saving figures, it believes that when used within an urban environment, where continual stopping occurs, the system will achieve a significant drop in consumption.
The system works by shutting down the engine when the vehicle stationary and neutral is selected, starting up again when the clutch is engaged.
Nick Blake, Mercedes sales engineering manager, says: "The potential savings of stop/start in vehicles operating in an urban environment is significant.
"And by fitting it as standard on Atego and Axor. Mercedes is pushing the use of fuel-saving technology to the next stage." is technology
