• Road safety minister Steven Norris says the Government will oppose the French government's proposal to introduce a European-wide ceiling on drivers' working hours of 200 hours a month by 1999. France plans to unveil the proposal when it takes over the
Presidency of the European Union in January. The French Government, hauliers and unions this week agreed that drivers' working time could be limited to 240 hours a month by October 1995, down to 220 hours in 1998 and finally 200 hours by 1999 (CM 29 Sept-5 Oct).
