being advised by the Association to wait, for the time being, before taking action to comply with EEC tachograph regulations. In a statement to members, the FTA says there is no doubt that the regulations will cause very substantial problems for companies both in terms of cost and because the unions are strongly opposed to fitment.
The situation is further complicated, says the FTA, as are so many other decisions, by the uncertainty of Britain's continued membership of the EEC and hence the continued validity of the regulations.
The FTA has made representations to the Government that the whole matter needs fundamental reappraisal and is engaged in discussions with senior officials. The Association will be seeking an early meeting with the new Transport Minister after the General Election.
Discussions are also taking place with the CBI, RHA and the unions.
