LONDON TRANSPORT is to take delivery of a large number — probably about 600 — "quiet" doubledeckers. The substantial part of its next batch of doubledeck orders will be made up of the Daimler Fleetline chassis with encapsulated engine package, of which a wooden mock-up is on show at Earls Court. The vehicles will be bodied by Park Royal.
The Daimler approach to quietening engine noise is different from that on the new Bristol VRT/ 3 already described in CM. The Daimler, of course, has its radiator at the rear and in the encapsulated version this is canted over and raised on the offside of the engin( compartment. Air is sucked in on the offside blowr through the engine compart. ment, and extracted on tht nearside.
Unlike the Bristol, there no air trun king to inlet and outlet grilles on the uppei deck. Instead both vents art on top of the bonnet cover thus necessitating onl3 minor modifications to th( body structure.
In a bid to assist the noist reduction programme, a: well as lessening emissions, turbocharged version of thi Leyland 680 engine — known as the 690 — is used in derated form.
