THE National Bus Company is likely to lose about £5m this year. This deficit could treble next year and cause widespread cutbacks in bus services.
NBC estimates that operating costs have risen by about 15 per cent this year and income has lagged behind with only a 10 per cent increase on I973's figure.
The company can increase its income by either putting up fares or by carrying more passengers. Both alternatives have been restricted this year — the three-day week effected the number of passengers carried and the Price Code forced the group to delay fare increases.
