• Shamrock and Rambler Coaches has been given authority to operate a 'hail and ride' mini bus service through the centre of Bournemouth despite strong opposition from Bournemouth Transport and the Borough of Bournemouth.
In possibly the last licensing battle under the current legislation, the company sought licence authority for a circular service using 16-seater mini buses with a frequency of eight per hour in each direction, taking in the main shopping street of Wimborne Road and a hypermarket on the outskirts of the town.
Ian Cunningham, general manager of Bournemouth Transport, said Wimborne Road was a major thoroughfare for traffic coming into Bournemouth from the North. The existing bus services were already experiencing significant delays and the situation would be worsened by the additional traffic.
Evidence was given by the council that Wimborne Road carried between 12,000 and 16.000 vehicles per 16 hour day. The county council was constructing a relief road.
