AN interesting new model has just made its appearance from the Sinithall works of the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd. It consists of a combination of the well-known Mammoth heavy-duty four-wheeler and a semitrailer attachment made by Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., High Road, North Finchley, London, 'N.12. It is ktiOwn as the Mammoth-Carrimore 12-tonner and has been expressly designed to meet the legal conditions affecting heavy-duty transport units, in consequence of the regulations issued under the Road Traffic Act.
In order to suit the special conditions of articulating vehicles, the Mammoth chassis has been shortened so that its wheelbase is now 10 ft. 6 ins instead of 16 ft 7 ins., as in the standard type,
The six-cylindered 110 b.h.p. overheadcamshaft engine remains the same, as do all the other major items of the chassis_ It will be remembered that a plate clutch is employed, driving through a four-speed gearbox to a double-reduction-, type rear axle. A forward-control driving position is provided. All the auxiliaries are on the' near side of the power unit, so that they are accessible for maintenance work.
In the case of the;machine illustrated a drop-side body is employed. Its loading lengliis .25 ft. 6 ins. ; thus it is well within the new legal overall limit of 33 ft. The interior height of the sides is 2 ft., and the complete vehicle can be turned around in a roadway about 27 ft. wide, this dimension being equal to the
diagonal length of the body.
For the Carrimore semi-trailer portion a 14-in.-deep frame of -76-in. steel is employed and the disc wheels are interchangeable with those of the Mammoth chassis. The foot brake, operating through a Dewandre vacuum servo, controls internal-expanding shoes in the drums of all six road wheels, so that the driver has only one control for service braking.
The turntable is of the well-kartivyn Carrimore type and is constructed of heavy steel pressings. The'pay-load recommended by the manufacturer for this new articulated six-wheeler is 12 tons.
The standard Mammoth chassis embodies a petrol engine, but the A.E.G.Acre high-speed oil engine can be installed if the purchaser desires.
