• A random check of 42 LGVs at Junction 26 on the M1 by Nottingham Police led to one driver being arrested and 19 immediate or temporary prohibitions being issued. Some 96 mechanical defects were found among 34 of the vehicles involved.
One driver faces charges in connection with a stolen annual test certificate and using a laser copy of an excise licence.
Another vehicle was running on red diesel and the driver faces a heavy fine. Eight vehicles were fault free.
El Staffordshire Police carried out its first all-day livestock transport check at Uttoxeter last week with officers from the RSPCA and Customs & Excise. It was part of a series of animal welfare checks being carried out in Midland market towns, including Stone and Newcastle under Lyme.
Thirty six vehicles including five tractive units and trailers, 18 rigids and 13 LCVs either failed to meet Construction and Use requirements or contravened the Welfare of Animals During Transport Order 1992 and the Transit of Animals Road and Rail Order 1975.
