I WAS REALLY rather shocked, but then perhaps I shouldn't be, reading John Craig's letter under the heading "Unions' threat is just staggering" (CM 7 April).
Mr Craig evidently has a rather jaundiced view of trade unionism in the 21st century.Trade unions are there to assist their members in ensuring that they are protected with regard to all areas of statutory legislation.
The trade unions and the employers' associations have been asked to keep a "watching brief' on the operation of the new law at the government's behest, concerning the review of the legislation which will take place over the next 12 months.
Both unions and employers' associations are key stakeholders in ensuring that this legislation is workable and is not abused by both employers and drivers.
I can only surmise that Mr Craig really is out of touch; not only with the trade unions but also with the employers' associations' views in dealing with this legislation.
