PROPOSED Government legislation to outlaw the cheap fares policies of some Labourcontrolled Metropolitan County Councils led transport committee chairmen to hold a private meeting in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The chairmen are understood to be preparing a united strategy to launch a campaign against the Government's proposals, which will clearly establish the legality of public transport subsidies within "reasonable" limits laid down by the Government.
