• The Lady Truckers Club (LTC) faces closure unless its members get more involved, according to the dispirited founder member.
"Communication between the committee members is almost non-existent, and there are no others showing an interest in taking over," complains Ilona Richards, who set up the LTC 11 years ago as a support network for women HGV drivers.
"The club is not going anywhere, it's not doing anything and membership has fallen. Let's not drag it out. I propose the LTC hos served its purpose and Richards: Let's not drag it out. is no longer required," she adds.
There are currently 150 LTC members, of which only about 20 are active. This is down from a peak membership of 170 in the club's heyday three years ago, when the LTC staged a dinner and dance with then-MP Edwina Curry as the guest speaker. This year, even the annual party at the West Bromwich truckstop has had to be cancelled. And this month's rather down-beat newsletter begins: 'We failed to make it to any truck shows, and no one told us how they went on—you'll have to read one of the glossy truck mags." A make-or-break AGM is proposed at URTU's Driving Force 97, at the Centrex Training & Conference Centre, Telford, on 6/7 September. Richards says: "I want ideas from other members on which direction, if any, the club should take.'
