• Ten defendants were last week found guilty of evading £209,000 of excise duty on 1.5 million cigarettes.
During the heaitg, Maidstone Crown Court heard how the cigarettes were transferred from a Dutch registered truck— which was also carrying a legitimate load from Italy—onto an empty British registered truck at Longfield, near Wrotham in Kent last July.
Six men pleaded guilty and three were found guilty after trial, including Nicholas Rockenbauer from Canterbury, the driver of the Dutch registered truck. One defendant, Dean Coley, failed to surrender to bail, but was found guilty in his absence and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. One other defendant was acquitted of all charges.
The convicted men are due to be sentenced on 12 September.
